Timing is everything when it comes to pouring concrete in Colorado. Our high altitude, intense sun, dramatic temperature swings, and unpredictable weather create challenges that don’t exist in most of the country. Pour at the wrong time and you risk cracking, weak concrete, or a surface that fails within a few years. Get the timing right and your driveway or patio can last 25-30 years.
This guide covers exactly when to pour concrete in Colorado: the best months, ideal temperatures, the weather to watch for, and what a good contractor does on a hot day.
The best time to pour concrete in Colorado is late April through early October, with late spring (May-June) and early fall (September-October) being ideal. Aim for temperatures between 50°F and 70°F, and avoid days when temperatures will drop below 40°F within 24 hours of the pour. On hot days (90°F and up), the pour should happen first thing in the morning.
Why Timing Matters More in Colorado
High Altitude Effects
At 6,000+ feet, Colorado Springs has thinner air, stronger UV, and lower humidity than sea-level cities. Fresh concrete loses surface moisture fast here, which leads to plastic shrinkage cracking, a surface that dries before the interior, and a weak, dusty top layer if the crew doesn’t manage it. The fix is timing: pour when the sun and wind are on your side, finish before the surface dries out, and cut control joints the same day so shrinkage happens where you want it.
Extreme Temperature Swings
Colorado regularly sees 40-50 degree temperature changes in a single day. A spring afternoon at 65°F can drop to 25°F overnight, which is a serious risk for concrete that hasn’t gained strength yet.
The Front Range sees well over 100 freeze-thaw cycles a year, far more than most regions. If concrete freezes before it reaches adequate strength, the damage is permanent.
The Ideal Temperature Range
Concrete cures through a chemical reaction called hydration, not by “drying,” and that reaction is sensitive to temperature.
50°F to 60°F is the sweet spot: hydration proceeds at a good rate, water evaporates slowly enough for proper curing, and the crew has time to finish without rushing. A broader workable range is 40°F to 90°F, but both ends need precautions.
What Happens When It’s Too Cold
The American Concrete Institute defines cold-weather concreting as any time temperatures are expected to fall below 40°F during curing.
Concrete must reach about 500 PSI before it can tolerate freezing even once. At 50°F that takes roughly 48 hours. Concrete that freezes before then can lose up to 50% of its potential strength, permanently.
Below 50°F hydration slows significantly; below 40°F it nearly stops. Water in fresh concrete expands 9% when it freezes, creating internal cracks and weak spots, and frozen concrete often scales and spalls at the surface.
What Happens When It’s Too Hot
Hot weather creates the opposite problem. Concrete sets too fast, leaving too little time to finish. Surface moisture evaporates faster than bleed water can replace it, causing plastic shrinkage cracks. And concrete cured hot develops lower 28-day strength than concrete cured at moderate temperatures. Most specifications cap concrete temperature at discharge around 90°F.
On days forecast at 90°F and up, we pour first thing in the morning. That’s one reason we normally form one day and pour the next: forming takes most of a morning, and forming and pouring the same day pushes the concrete into the afternoon heat. Forming the day before means the truck can show up at first light.
Best Months to Pour Concrete in Colorado
March-April: Risky
Highly unpredictable. Snow is common through mid-April, and March is often Colorado’s snowiest month. Possible with careful forecast watching and cold-weather precautions, but not the time to be in a hurry.
May-June: Excellent
Temperatures typically 50-75°F. The risk of late snow drops sharply after mid-May, though Colorado can surprise you.
July-August: Good with Precautions
Afternoons often pass 85-90°F, so pours happen in the morning. Monsoon season brings afternoon thunderstorms; the forecast gets checked the night before and again at dawn.
September-October: Excellent
Often the best time to pour. Mild days (60-75°F), low humidity, little precipitation. Later in October, overnight lows need watching and blankets may be needed.
November-February: Challenging
Cold-weather techniques required: hot water in the mix, accelerating admixtures, insulated blankets. Possible, but it adds cost and risk, and it’s best reserved for projects that can’t wait.
Weather Factors Beyond Temperature
Rain
Before the pour: Don’t pour on saturated ground. During: Rain on fresh concrete washes cement paste off the surface and leaves it weak and dusty; if rain is in the forecast, the pour waits. After: Fresh concrete needs 4-8 hours before it can take light rain, and 24-48 hours is better. A good crew has plastic sheeting on the truck just in case.
Wind
Wind speeds up surface evaporation, and in Colorado’s dry air that’s the main cause of plastic shrinkage cracks, the random pattern of fine cracks you see on a surface that dried before it was finished. Above about 15 mph the risk climbs fast. Morning pours, when the air is usually calmer, are the simplest defense.
Humidity
Colorado’s low humidity, combined with altitude and sun, creates conditions where evaporation can easily outrun the bleed water rising to the surface. Timing the pour and finishing promptly matter more here than almost anywhere else in the country.
Time of Day Matters
Spring and fall: Mid-morning works well. The concrete sets and gains initial strength during the warmest part of the day and holds enough warmth through the night.
Summer: On hot days, first thing in the morning, before the sun and wind pick up. Afternoon pours in July and August are where plastic shrinkage cracks come from.
Late fall: Late morning, to make the most of the limited warm hours before overnight temperatures drop.
Don’t just check tomorrow’s weather. Look at the 7-day forecast. Concrete needs consistent conditions for at least 48-72 hours, and ideally 7 days, to develop adequate strength. A warm pour day followed by a hard freeze two nights later can still cause damage.
Concrete Curing Timeline
24-48 Hours: 20-30% Strength
Set enough for light foot traffic. Still very vulnerable to freezing and rain. Keep everything else off it.
7 Days: 70-75% Strength
The “70 in 7” rule. Safe for passenger vehicles on driveways. If overnight lows dropped below 40°F during the first week, extend this to 10-14 days.
28 Days: Full Design Strength
The industry standard for compressive strength. A 4,000 PSI mix should test at 4,000 PSI by now. Heavy vehicles and RVs wait until this point.
Scheduling and Availability
Concrete contractors along the Front Range are busiest from May through September, so lead times are longest then. Late April and October usually offer faster scheduling with weather that’s still workable, as long as you’re watching the forecast.
