How an asphalt driveway ages has more to do with what’s under and around it than with the asphalt itself. Early trouble usually traces back to a soft base, water with nowhere to go, a mat laid too thin, or mix that cooled before it was rolled — along with things no contractor controls, like soil movement and heavy loads. So that’s where every one of our paving jobs starts — grade, drainage, base, and compaction get settled before a single ton of asphalt shows up.
You also get a straight answer about what to build. We pave asphalt and we pour concrete driveways, so we recommend whichever one fits your property and budget — we don’t have to sell you the only thing on the truck. And when a project calls for both, like an asphalt drive with a concrete apron at the street or a concrete approach at the garage, it’s one estimate, one schedule, and one contract.
What every asphalt job is held to
Any paving company can quote a price per square foot. These three things have the most to do with how long asphalt lasts — and they’re in writing on every estimate.
Base before blacktop
The ground gets checked before anything is paved. Soft spots are dug out and rebuilt with compacted road base, and the surface is graded so water runs off and away instead of sitting on — or under — your asphalt.
Thickness in writing
Our typical residential spec is 3″ of compacted asphalt, adjusted for what your project actually carries. The number is on your estimate, and the plant’s tonnage tickets are available on request — tons delivered don’t lie about how thick the mat is.
Placed hot, rolled right
Asphalt only compacts while it’s hot, and it’s a long haul from the plant to Monument, Black Forest, or up Ute Pass. We schedule for weather that gives the crew time to roll it properly, and we don’t pave on frozen ground.
